Top journalist predicts Serena Williams' first tournament

by

The most discussed topic in recent days has been the potential return of Serena Williams on the WTA tour.

The former world No.1 – who hasn't competed in an official tournament since the 2022 edition of the US Open – could be back in action very soon and the latest rumors suggest that she is in excellent shape. During an interview before the start of the Doha WTA 1000, American star Alycia Parks revealed that she had a practice session with Serena a few days before arriving in Qatar and added that she was impressed.

The American legend will be able to return to action from February 22 and it is not easy to predict which tournament she will participate in. Some experts and insiders have suggested that she will be present at the Indian Wells tournament, while other analysts are convinced that she will join forces with her sister Venus at the next US Open.

Latest news on Serena

During the latest episode of the podcast hosted by Andy Roddick, top journalist Jon Wertheim commented on the possible return of Serena and added a further detail: “I’ve got to say, I think this is great. We learned our lesson from Lindsey Vonn to Novak Djokovic. If Serena Williams still thinks she’s got some juice that can be squeezed, go nuts. It would be one of the great tennis stories of 2026.”

He also added: “It certainly is looking that way, I’ve heard various things, this is more a mixed doubles, or a return to Wimbledon, where she did not like the savor of her last match there. I think it’s great.”

If Serena were to actually return to the WTA tour, the media interest would be really huge and everyone will want to understand if she can be competitive at the highest level again.

Her sister Venus put in a strong performance against Olga Danilovic at the last Australian Open, while 41-year-old Vera Zvonareva recently became the fourth player in history to win a match in a WTA 1000 after passing the age of 40.
