NASSAU, Bahamas — Purdue basketball will not have forward Liam Murphy for this week’s Baha Mar Championships, and the veteran forward could be out into December.

Boilermakers coach Matt Painter told IndyStar in an exclusive interview that Monday’s MRI on the North Florida transfer’s shoulder did not reveal any specific damage. However, he is not year ready to return to competition.

Murphy, a transfer from North Florida, injured the shoulder in practice Saturday and was listed as out for Sunday’s 97-79 win over Akron. It was not the same shoulder on which Murphy had surgery in the spring.

“For an injury, it was good news,” Painter said.

Murphy will be reevaluated in a week.

Purdue needed extra minutes from Murphy in the first two games of the season with Trey Kaufman-Renn sidelined. Murphy played 18 minutes in the season opener against Evansville.

He made a more substantial impact in the 87-77 victory over Oakland, making 3 of 6 from 3-point range and scoring 11 points in 10 minutes.

“I thought in the first two games he really helped us, but TK was out,” Painter said. “Our rotation is what it is, but he’s going to be ready. You have foul trouble, you have injuries, he’s going to be able to get an opportunity and I know he’ll be ready to play.”

The 6-foot-8 Murphy shot 42.3% from 3-point range on 246 attempts for North Florida last season.
