Brock Lesnar made his shocking return at the end of SummerSlam, and he immediately took out John Cena with a huge F5. Following the end of the show, Triple H has made it clear Lesnar was on Cena’s wishlist of opponents for his retirement tour.
While speaking on the post-SummerSlam show, Triple H was asked about Brock Lesnar’s return and whether there had been conversations about who should face John Cena on his final tour, especially since Brock is clearly a big-name opponent.
Triple H explained that when putting together this kind of farewell run, there are only so many dates, big matches and memorable moments available. While the goal is to check off as many as possible, it’s not realistic to hit them all.
The Game made it clear that this tour is about John Cena’s personal wishlist; it’s Cena writing the final chapter of his career. Triple H admitted that Cena once said WWE would have to make a huge mistake to mess up his legacy but for him, the priority is making sure Cena gets to finish on his own terms.
Triple H added that one of the first things he asked John Cena was what he wanted for the retirement tour and how he envisioned it. From there, they’ve been working through it together.
“When you’re doing this, you know you have a finite number of dates and big matches and incredible things you want to do, and you want to get to the majority of them. But you cannot get to every single one of them.
But as I said in the beginning, for me, this is John Cena’s wishlist. John Cena’s — it is him writing the last chapter of his book. And I think people saw a conversation where he said we would have to screw up pretty badly to ruin his career.
But it’s not about that for me — it’s about John being able to go out the way he wants to and to write his final chapter. I know what that is like as a performer.
So it’s one of the very first things I said to him: what do you want? And how? And we are working through that.”
Some fans are obviously upset that Brock Lesnar came back to WWE. They’re angry because he was named in Janel Grant’s lawsuit against Vince McMahon, and that’s why John Cena choosing Lesnar as an opponent is seen as a tone-deaf move. Regardless, we’ll have to see how WWE will book Cena and Lesnar’s feud in the coming weeks, even if some fans don’t necessarily want to see it.
