UConn women’s basketball drubs Georgetown, 83-42

by

UConn women’s basketball used a dominant first half to sail past the Georgetown Hoyas at CareFirst Arena on Thursday, 83-42. The Huskies led by 31 at halftime but only extended their advantage by 10 over the final 20 minutes, in part due to a nine-point third quarter.

Sarah Strong put up another ridiculous stat line with 25 points, eight rebounds, five assists and four steals while Azzi Fudd finished with 19 points, six rebounds and five assists. Serah Williams added 12 points — her second straight game in double-figures — six rebounds, four blocks and three steals.

Defensively, UConn held Georgetown to a 1-19 day from three while forcing 28 turnovers. The Huskies turned those into 35 points the other way and also racked up 27 fast break points and 42 points in the paint.

UConn ran out to a 14-0 start, holding Georgetown with a point for the first 5:10, and eventually extended its lead as far as 20-2. The Hoyas were hapless against the Huskies’ press defense. They made just one of their first eight shots and turned the ball over nine times in the opening quarter. The hosts eventually found a foothold and closed the period on an 8-0 run to cut UConn’s advantage to 20-10.

The Huskies didn’t let the good vibes last long, though. They started the second quarter with 11 straight points before Georgetown snapped the run with a layup, then piled on another 10 points in a row.

After starting 0-10 from three, UConn got hot midway through the frame. Strong broke the drought with a triple from the top of the arc, kicking off a 5-9 stretch to close the half. Strong had more points at the midway point than the Hoyas, 21-20, as the Huskies took a 31-point lead into the locker room.

Both offenses came out of the break ice-cold. They both made one basket for two points through the first 6:28 of the third quarter, going a combined 2-17 from the field. UConn still out-scored the Hoyas in the frame by a narrow 9-8 margin.

In the final period, the Huskies snapped out of their funk. They ripped off a 10-0 run — their fourth spurt of 10 or more periods — to push the lead over 40. Despite the rough third period, UConn still came away with a 41-point victory.

The Huskies have now won 36 consecutive games, their longest winning streak since the 2017-18 season, when they started 36-0.

Next, UConn will head to Seton Hall on Saturday for a noon tip on Peacock and NBC Sports Network. The contest was originally scheduled for Sunday before getting moved up 24 hours due to a incoming winter snow storm.
