UConn women’s basketball sets dates for Hall of Fame legend’s jersey retirement and more

by

After the UConn women’s basketball team’s game against DePaul at Gampel Pavilion this season, a Huskies player will never wear No. 10 again.

Huskies legend Sue Bird will become just the third women’s basketball player in school history to have her jersey retired during the Dec. 7 matchup, joining No. 50 Rebecca Lobo and No. 32 Swin Cash. UConn only retires basketball jerseys of players who have been inducted into the Naismith Hall of Fame, as Bird was in September. The men’s program has retired two jerseys: No. 34 Ray Allen and No. 32 Richard “Rip” Hamilton.

UConn great Maya Moore was also inducted into the Hall of Fame this year, but there is not a date set for her No. 23 jersey retirement.

Bird was a two-time NCAA champion at UConn, leading the team to titles in 2000 and 2002. She was the unanimous national player of the year as a senior in 2002, and she won the Nancy Lieberman Award given to the best point guard in the country three straight seasons from 2000-02. She went on to win four WNBA Championships in 20 years with the Seattle Storm, and her No. 10 jersey was also retired by the franchise in 2023.

The Huskies will honor several other former players during the 2025-26 season. The 2015 and 2016 NCAA championship teams, who completed the program’s iconic four-peat, will be added to the Huskies of Honor wall at Gampel Pavilion during a game against Villanova on Jan. 15. The teams that began the four-peat in 2013 and 2014 were added to the wall in Jan. 2024. Across the 2014-15 and 2015-16 seasons, UConn lost a single game and won 74 consecutively to begin the program’s 111-game streak that set a record across both men’s and women’s college basketball.

Former UConn star Aaliyah Edwards will also be inducted into the Huskies of Honor this season during the team’s Jan. 19 game against Notre Dame. Individual players join the wall if they graduate from UConn and are named to the 10-player WBCA All-American first team at least once. Edwards earned the recognition as a senior in 2023-24, when she averaged a career-high 17.6 points and 9.2 rebounds to help lead the Huskies to their 23rd Final Four appearance.
