UFC BJJ champion Mikey Musumeci reveals he’s a free agent

by

Arguably the face of UFC BJJ, Mikey Musumeci, is now a free agent.

Musumeci, the UFC BJJ bantamweight champion, revealed Wednesday on “The Ariel Helwani Show” that his contract has come to an end after competing three times under the UFC promotional banner. However, he’s not exactly parting ways with the UFC, as he’s expecting to re-negotiate with Hunter Campbell.

“I’m a free agent right now,”Musumeci said. “My contract like ends in a few days. I’m supposed to meet with them soon, so we’ll see what happens with that.”

When asked if he’d re-sign with UFC BJJ, Musumeci’s answer was quick:

“I don’t know.”

What Musumeci does know is that he’ll only compete with the UFC under an exclusive agreement. He can’t see himself having a contract that allows him to compete in other grappling organizations, putting to rest the speculations that he could potentially compete for Craig Jones Invitational, a rival promotion, should he re-sign.

“I think the UFC would back away,” Musumeci said when asked about potentially competing for UFC BJJ and other promotions. “It’s not worth it for them to invest millions of dollars into something that they’re just having over their athletes that they’re building to someone else.”

Musumeci is one of the best pound-for-pound grapplers today, and one of the biggest stars in the sport. He’s a multiple-time gold medalist at the jiu-jitsu World Championship, and also a former ONE Championship Submission Grappling champion. Musumeci has headlined two of the three events UFC BJJ has had since launching this summer.
