UFC PERTH ‘ULBERG VS. REYES’ PLAY-BY-PLAY UPDATES
Carlos Ulberg crushed Dominick Reyes in the main event of UFC Perth to book his ticket to UFC 320 and become the likely next challenger for the winner of Magomed Ankalaev vs. Alex Pereira 2. In doing so, he showed he’s a real contender and that Reyes, despite his three fight winning streak, was a pretender. The stunning win for Ulberg shows cynicism over Reyes’ recent wins was justified and bumps Reyes way down the pecking order at 205 lbs.
In the co-main Jimmy Crute got another first round submission win, making good use of those dry body conditions. He got Ivan Erslan down and hit him with the camel clutch — Sgt. Slaughter would be proud.
Before that Jack Jenkins outclassed Ramon Taveras, showing off his kicking game and crafty grappling.
Also on the main card, Neil Magny came from behind to submit Jake Matthews in the third round. Matthews is the only Aussie/Kiwi fighter on the card to lose tonight. The main card opened with Tom Nolan getting knocked down but then coming back to win with his first UFC submission.
The Prelims ended with a fun fight between Navajo Stirling and Rodolfo Bellato. Stirling was in control of most of the contest and showed off some of the most exciting striking we’ve seen from him yet in the Octagon.
The only finishes on the undercard were all from City Kickboxing, with Cam Rowston TKOing Andre Petroski and Brando Ciric smoking Elisha Ellison.
Also on the undercard Jamie Mullarkey used his wrestling to overwhelm Rolando Bedoya, Colby Thicknesse mounted Josias Musasa at will, Michelle Montague came through a bloody contest with Luana Carolina and Alexia Thainara mauled Loma Lookboonmee to further suggest she might be a very fun fighter to watch in the future.
Carlos Ulberg vs. Dominick Reyes
Black Jag earns the next shot at Light Heavyweight.
Official decision: Carlos Ulberg def. Dominick Reyes by KO (right and left hooks), round 1 (4:27)
Round 1: A timid start to the fight, with both men feeling each other out. Ulberg is the more aggressive, though. He snaps Reyes’ head back with a jab. After some more feeling out, Ulberg steps around Reyes and clocks him with a huge one-two that puts him down and out!
Ulberg is the favorite in this potentially pivotal Light Heavyweight bout.
We move onto our main event, between New Zealand’s Carlos Ulberg and USA’s Dominick Reyes.
Jimmy Crute vs. Ivan Erslan
I wasn’t the only one who recognized that!
Official decision: Jimmy Crute def. Ivan Erslan by submission (rear naked choke), round 1 (3:19)
Round 1: Erslan lands some early combos, going to the legs and the head. Crute ducks under and gets a takedown in the middle of the cage. Erslan crawls to the cage and gets up. Crute tries to take his back there. He scores another takedown, but Erslan pops up quickly. They go down in a heap and Crute tries to find a choke again. He climbs on Erslan’s back and digs his toes into the fence. Erslan scrambles out of it, but Crute reverses and gets on top again. Crute gets under Erslan’s chin and gets a neck crank. Erslan taps! It almost looked like the camel clutch from pro wrestling fame.
Our co-main event is up next.
Jack Jenkins vs. Ramon Taveras
An emotional Jack Jenkins celebrates the win on home soil.
Official decision: Jack Jenkins def. Ramon Taveras by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28)
Round 3: Jenkins gets a bodylock takedown and lands in Taveras’ half guard. Taveras closes guard, playing for a stand-up. Jenkins struggles to land meaningful offense from top position. Taveras gets to his feet, but Jenkins pulls him down and takes the back. Jenkins rushes for the choke, but Taveras is able to spin out and get top position. Jenkins also keeps his guard close to minimize any ground and pound. Jenkins scrambles up to his feet. He finishes the round throwing punches.
Round 2: Jenkins lands some leg and body kicks to start us off. Taveras presses the action and tries to get a takedown on the fence. The action ends up getting paused, though, for a knee to the groin on Jenkins. Taveras storms forwards off the restart, Jenkins does well to counter him and land another hard body kick. Jenkins lands a couple of foot sweeps, but Taveras is up quickly each time. Jenkins steps in and lands an outside trip for the takedown.
Jenkins is up 20-18 on my scorecard.
Round 1: Jenkins tries to establish his kicks early, focusing on the body. Taveras blocks these early attempts, while head-hunting. Jenkins then goes upstairs with a kick and wobbles Taveras! Jenkins closes in trying to get him out of there, but Taveras manages to circle away. Jenkins lands punches on him, though. Taveras fires back and seems to have regained his composure. Jenkins lands a couple of good body kicks after that and a nice hook.
Jenkins takes round one 10-9.
Jenkins will hope to get the Aussie fans back on their feet next. He’s the favorite against Taveras.
Neil Magny vs. Jake Matthews
Official decision: Neil Magny def. Jake Matthews by submission (D’arce choke), round 3 (3:08)
Here’s the finishing sequence from Magny, who now has two submission wins in a row.
Round 3: Magny goes for a takedown against the fence, early, and Matthews jumps the guillotine. Magny rolls over to get out and they end up on the feet with Matthews pushing Magny into the fence. Magny reverses and lands some nice knees inside the clinch. Magny goes for a d’arce. He can’t get it, but he ends up in full mount. Matthews explodes up to his feet, though. Magny drags Matthews down again and goes for the d’arce again. This he taps!
Round 2: Matthews gets the takedown early in round two. He takes the back and looks for the rear naked choke. Matthews uses the position to get into mount and put on a mounted triangle. Matthews tries to take the arm as well, but he can’t make it work. Matthews lands some ground and pound and ends up settling for Magny’s half guard. Matthews does well to maintain top position and ride out the round.
Matthews takes round two, 10-9, and ties things up 19-19 on my scorecard.
Here’s that moment at the end of round one:
Round 1: Magny does a good job of sniping Matthews and getting out of way of Matthews’ blitzes. He sticks him on the fence and manages to get the takedown. Matthews focuses on the guillotine. Magny defends well initially, but Matthews manages to sweep and mount. The seconds tick away and the referee dives in to stop the fight. Magny shows that he’s awake. And now the referee is saying the fight is still on, but the round is over. I think the referee just saved himself some embarrassment there.
Despite all that weirdness at the end, Magny gets the first round 10-9.
Matthews will hope to keep the good vibes going for the Australian and Kiwi fighters tonight.
Matthews picks up a big win over Chidi Njokuani in his last fight.
Neil Magny comes into this fight as a big underdog to Jake Matthews.
Sadly it seems our play-by-play stream isn’t loading right now (which includes all the Prelims and Tom Nolan vs. Charlie Campbell). It should come back at some point. For now, though, I will write updates directly into this post starting with Neil Magny vs. Jake Matthews.
