UFC Vegas 110 results: Steve Garcia breaks out with thunderous TKO of David Onama; chaos reigns in co-main event

by

Steve Garcia shined in his first UFC main event. The streaking featherweight contender made it seven straight UFC victories with a scintillating early knockout of David Onama on Saturday at UFC Vegas 110.

Garcia (19-5) caught Onama (14-3) early with a hard left hook then barreled forward with a flurry of unanswered punches and kicks to earn a TKO stoppage at the 3:34 mark of the opening round at the UFC APEX in Las Vegas. The finish was Garcia’s sixth of his seven-fight win streak and propelled Garcia into a tie for fifth all-time on the UFC’s featherweight knockouts list.

“I’m a kid from Albuquerque who didn’t have a whole lot going on in his life,” an emotional Garcia said post-fight. “I had a prayer when I was 15 years old, and today was one of my answers. I wanted to make something of myself. I came through the UFC, I went on this long fight streak, I asked God to make me somebody and I told him I’d do the work — and here I am doing the work. I’m here proving my worth.”

As his numbers pile up, Garcia, 33, continues to emerge as a legitimate contender at 145 pounds. The Jackson-Wink product has beaten Calvin Kattar, Chase Hooper and Kyle Nelson during his current run, among several others.

Garcia also called for a chance to contend for Max Holloway’s ceremonial BMF title in his post-fight interview.

Onama, 31, snaps a four-fight win streak of his own in the losing effort — a run that saw him take out longtime contender Giga Chikadze via unanimous decision in April.

The night’s co-main event devolved into yet another ignominious chapter for MMA’s 2025 refereeing woes, as Waldo Cortes-Acosta (15-2) secured one of the most bizarre first-round finishes you’ll ever see.

Matched against one-time PFL heavyweight tournament winner Ante Delija (26-7), Cortes-Acosta suffered a grisly eye-poke in the opening round during a punching flurry that appeared to end the fight. Referee referee Mark Smith jumped in to stop Delija, prompting Delija to immediately celebrate and Cortes-Acosta’s team to rush into the cage with a stool. However, upon replay confirming the eye-poke, Cortes-Acosta was seemingly given much longer than the mandated five-minute window to recover, and the fight was restarted with Smith staunchly refusing to take a point away from Delija.

Yet somehow, it didn’t even matter. Seconds later, Cortes-Acosta stormed back and viciously knocked out Delija with a two-punch combination followed by a flurry of ground-and-pound.

The official time of the stoppage came at 3:59 of Round 1.

Afterward, a furious Cortes-Acosta fumed about Delija’s eye-pokes and called out UFC heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall in an expletive-laden interview.

Ironically enough, Delija is a teammate and training partner of Aspinall, whose Oct. 25 title defense against Ciryl Gane ended in an unceremonious no-contest due to eye-pokes by Gane.
