We are just under two weeks away from the 2025-26 college basketball season tipping off as excitement is in the air once again for the North Carolina Tar Heels.
Following a disappointing ending to their 2024-25 season, Hubert Davis and his staff revamped the roster in hopes of finding success. Not only did the Tar Heels land talent in the transfer portal but they also welcomed in a three-player recruiting class headlined by five-star forward Caleb Wilson.

However, another recruit in their class is drawing attention as we get set for the upcoming season.
Sam Lance of On3 wrote on 15 freshmen who will impact winning for their teams this season. Making the list at No. 8 is UNC wing Derek Dixon:
There’s been a lot of talk this offseason surrounding North Carolina, specifically the lack of addressing the point guard position. It’s been brought up again and again, but what people may not realize is North Carolina has a perfectly capable backup in the wings: Washington D.C.’s 2025 Gatorade POTY Derek Dixon. The Gonzaga College HS and Team Takeover product knows how to win, taking the DCSAA Championship and reaching the Peach Jam Final Four during his high school career. Dixon may also be the best pure shooter in the class. The point guard will help supplement international prospect Luka Bogavac and Colorado State transfer Kyan Evans at the guard spot. Expect Dixon to produce in a big way and answer all of our questions about North Carolina’s point guard position.
Dixon finished his high school career as a four-star recruit but saw his stock increase over time. He could be a big time surprise in college basketball this season which would be good news for the Tar Heels.
With UNC needing to solidify the point guard spot, Dixon might be the long-term solution.
