The North Carolina Tar Heels continue to be a massive disappointment this college football season. UNC, fresh out of its first bye week, lost 38-10 to Clemson on Saturday.
Granted, the Tigers (2-3, 1-2 ACC) needed a “get right” game, but North Carolina’s (2-3, 0-1 ACC) performance was inexcusable, especially for a program with its amount of preseason hype. The Tar Heels scored just one touchdown and gained 270 yards, most of which came in garbage time, while allowing 488 yards and 35 first-half point.

It should come as no surprise that, in USA TODAY Sports’ Week 6 evaluation, UNC is of college football’s “biggest losers.”
“North Carolina’s stunning incompetence through the first five games of Belichick’s debut, is proof positive that college football may be too much for him, just as success in the NFL escaped his grasp after losing Tom Brady as his starting quarterback,” Paul Myerberg wrote. “UNC isn’t just bad; this is one of the worst, major-conference teams in the country. Belichick had an entire offseason to rebuild the roster and create a two-deep, based on a blueprint developed over his decades of player-personnel experience. Instead, he built a team that is inept offensively and even worse defensively.”
North Carolina lost a 48-14 blowout to TCU in its season-opener, but maybe that was just a bad game. The Tar Heels responded by holding Charlotte to three points in a Week 2 victory, followed by a lights-out defensive performance the next weekend against Richmond.
After getting 25-pieced by UCF and obliterated by Clemson, it’s clear that UNC struggles against strong competition. How long will North Carolina go before winning another football game?
