Uruguay will compete in Pool D at Rugby World Cup 2027. The outcome of the draw made in Australia on December 03 is not what Los Teros played, staff nor supporters would have been wanting. Pool D sees Uruguay playing against Ireland, Scotland and Portugal at Australia 2027.
The draw is not a satisfactory outcome for Uruguay. Despite Ireland and Scotland arguably being a less complicated duo of rivals compared to those awaiting Chile in Pool A, Los Cóndores have Hong Kong compared to Uruguay’s much tougher Band 4 opponent, Portugal.
Los Teros recently faced Portugal away as part of the November 2025 Internationals. Uruguay competed a comfortable victory. The 26-8 victory saw Uruguay expanding their win-loss record against Portugal to 7 wins and 3 losses from 10 test matches. They first crossed paths in 1999 as part of Rugby World Cup Qualifying.
The year 1999 marked Uruguay’s debut at a Rugby World Cup. Los Teros faced Scotland, South Africa and Spain. Uruguay defeated Spain in their debut and had a second win that is yet to be correctly acknowledged by World Rugby. Scotland fielded David Hilton who was not eligible. This is comparative to Spain’s disqualification from Rugby World Cup 2023 and Romania’s from Rugby World Cup 1999 for fielding a player not eligible in qualifying. As such, the official record needs to read Uruguay win 28-0 rather than 43-12.
Scotland toured the Americas in July 2024. The busy schedule saw test matches against the USA, Canada, Chile and Uruguay. Scotland went unbeaten but were given a tough match in Montevideo, a contest won 31-19 by the visitors.
Unlike Portugal and Scotland, Ireland will be first-time opponents for Uruguay. The clash between the teams will officially open international competition between Ireland and Uruguay.
With the draw now out of the way, attention now turns to the official match schedule. It will be unveiled on February 03, 2026.
