TYR Summer Championships, Day One Finals: Van Mathias Fires 26.76 in 50 Breaststroke to Likely Secure Pan Pacs Bid; Kieran Smith Stars
Will Caeleb Dressel qualify for next summer’s Pan Pacific Championships? That’s the leading question ahead of the first night of finals at the TYR Summer Championships. The four-day meet is being held at the William Woollett Aquatic Center in Southern California, and is one of the final chances for American athletes to punch a ticket to the 2026 edition of Pan Pacs.
USA Swimming is selecting its Pan Pacs roster based on the results of multiple competitions from this summer – Nationals, World Championships, World University Games, TYR Championships and the World Junior Champs. The top-four times in the 100 freestyle and 200 freestyle from the aforementioned meets’ combined results will qualify. In other events, the top-two times will secure an invitation, although several third-fastest women’s times will likely receive a berth, since the American women will have greater flexibility than the U.S. men in reaching the 26-athlete roster cap.
Dressel will need to be faster than 21.68 in the final of the 50 freestyle to earn a nod to the Pan Pacific Champs. That time from Santo Condorelli currently ranks second among American men. In the morning prelims, Dressel clocked a mark of 22.00, which was the second-fastest of the session, behind the 21.63 of Australian Jamie Jack.
Also racing in the night session was Kieran Smith, the middle-distance standout who just missed a bid to the World Championships. Smith was the top seed in the 200 individual medley, showing his range.
Here is an event-by-event recap of the Day One finals:
Women’s 1500 Freestyle
Australian Tiana Kritzinger opened the finals session with a victory in the 1500 freestyle, as she covered her 30 laps in 16:16.61. That time was nearly two seconds clear of the 16:18.38 managed by fellow Aussie Molly Walker. Through 400 meters, Walker held a lead over her countrywoman, but Kritzinger took command at the 500-meter turn and gradually increased her advantage through the remainder of the race.

Women’s 200 Individual Medley
A dominant back half propelled Justina Kozan to the wall, as she recorded a personal-best time of 2:11.24 for victory. Sitting sixth at the midway point of the race, Kozan made a major move on the breaststroke leg. Behind a split of 37.21, Kozan moved into second place and set the stage for her closing freestyle leg. Down the last length, Kozan split 29.81 and pulled away from the field.
Australia had another strong showing as Kayla Hardy and Isabella Boyd finished second and third. Hardy stopped the clock in 2:13.10, followed by Boyd in 2:13.58. Louisville’s Summer Cardwell was fourth in 2:13.64.

Men’s 200 Individual Medley
Two-time Olympian Kieran Smith packaged a stellar performance en route to the win in the 200 individual medley. Sitting second to Grant House after the opening butterfly leg, Smith took control on backstroke and was never challenged from that point forward. Smith posted a swim of 1:57.26, which was more than a second faster than the 1:58.58 of House, the runnerup.
Smith made a push at his personal-best time of 1:56.97, set at the 2024 United States Olympic Trials. The effort bodes well for Smith and his upcoming races in the 200 freestyle and 400 freestyle. Smith is trying to move into the top-two in the U.S. in those events, which would grant him a place at next year’s Pan Pacific Champs.
Following House in third place was Trenton Julian, who went 1:58.74.

Rising sprint star Julie Mishler backed up her top seed from the prelims with a triumph in the 50 freestyle. Misher, representing Fishers Area, was the lone athlete to break the 25-second barrier, clocking 24.90. Mishler put some distance between herself and Jaimie De Lutiis, the Australian who placed second in 25.11. Third place went to Kristina Paegle in 25.37.
Bound for Louisville, Mishler had a superb final high school season earlier this year in Indiana. In the 50-yard freestyle, Mishler went 21.56 to set a national high school record, breaking the previous mark of 21.59, set by Gretchen Walsh in 2020.

Men’s 50 Freestyle
Australia’s Jamie Jack followed his top time from the morning with a matching performance at night to grab victory in the 50 freestyle. Jack notched his second effort of 21.63, a strong back half enabling him to erase an early deficit against Caeleb Dressel and get to the wall ahead of American Hunter Armstrong (21.76). Jack is now ranked as the No. 10 performer in the 2025 world rankings.
Armstrong gave a scare to the 21.68 performance from Santo Condorelli at the World Championships, coming up just .08 shy of that time. Still, the swim is a momentum-builder for Armstrong, who will race the 50 backstroke, 100 backstroke and 100 freestyle over the next few days. Based on his 50 freestyle time, Armstrong is well-positioned to nail down a Pan Pacs berth in one of his other events.
In third place in 21.94 was Dressel, who is racing in just his third meet since the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. Dressel will contest the 50 butterfly and 100 butterfly at the TYR Champs, the shorter fly an opportunity to qualify for Pan Pacs.

Tokyo Olympian Rhyan White stormed to a first-place finish in the 200 backstroke, prevailing in 2:09.11. White’s time was good for a win of more than two seconds over Australia’s Bella Grant, who touched the wall in 2:11.37. White only trailed at the first turn, then took control on the second lap and pulled away from the field. Macky Hodges checked in with a third-place finish of 2:12.27.

Ewing previously competed for North Carolina State in the NCAA ranks, but has transferred to Arizona State for the 2025-26 season.

Australia’s quality night continued as Mia O’Leary and Sienna Harben occupied the top-two positions, with O’Leary emerging on top in 31.09. Harben wasn’t far behind in 31.35 while O’Leary’s victory was the fourth of the night for the visitors from Down Under.
Two-time Olympian Gabby Rose was the third-place finisher, on the strength of a personal best of 31.49. The 47-year-old, who raced at the 1996 and 2000 Olympics, has enjoyed a career resurgence over the past few years, including a semifinal appearance at the U.S. Olympic Trials last summer.

Men’s 50 Breaststroke
Coming off a career-best swim during the morning prelims, Indiana’s Van Mathias was even better at night, clocking 26.76 to tie for No. 3 on the all-time American performers list. More important, Mathias now seems destined for next summer’s Pan Pacific Championships, as his time was faster than the 26.90 of Campbell McKean and the 26.92 of Michael Andrew from Nationals.
Once the World Junior Championships conclude later this month, USA Swimming will name the top-two finishers in the 50 breaststroke to Pan Pacs, and Mathias is almost certain to be one of those athletes. Mathias was out among the leaders in the one-lap event, but got stronger in the latter stages of the race, the gap clearly widening between Mathias and the field.
Beyond the 50 breaststroke, Mathias will be an intriguing watch in the 100 breaststroke later in the meet. Depth in that stroke is always welcomed, especially for duty on the 400 medley relay.
