Last year was a season to forget for Virginia Tech quarterback Kyron Drones. After entering the season with major expectations, Drones struggled and missed four games due to injuries. Even when Drones played, he wasn’t healthy. This offseason, we learned that Drones was dealing with multiple injuries last season and tried to play through them.
Drones had a promising 2023 campaign — his first as a starter after transferring to the Hokies from Baylor. Drones wasn’t as good last season, but we know why. Now, he’s back, and while he’s lost some of his best offensive weapons, he has an experienced new coach and a QB-friendly offense.

The Hokies hired Phillip Montgomery, a longtime former offensive coordinator at multiple schools and former head coach at Tulsa, as the new OC to replace Tyler Bowen. It’s a good change for Drones. Additionally, the Hokies’ offensive line should be better under the tutelage of new OL coach Matt Moore.
Drones enters the 2025 season as one of the ACC’s most experienced quarterbacks. Where does he rank?
Andy Staples on On3 recently ranked the top 10 ACC QBs for 2025, and he has Drones ranked No. 9.
Here’s what Staples said about Drones:
Drones took a step back during an injury-riddled 2024 season, but he still has the arm and the wheels that offered so much promise when he came to Virginia Tech from Baylor.
After OC Tyler Bowen left to coach the offensive line at Ohio State, Hokies coach Brent Pry brought in former Baylor OC and Tulsa head coach Philip Montgomery to run the offense. Montgomery’s offense is fairly quarterback-friendly, so we’ll see if it can make the most of Drones’ skillset.
Here’s the full list:
That’s fair. Drones has a lot to prove this season, and he knows it. While Bowen wasn’t as bad as some say he was, Montgomery is a significant upgrade. That’s good for Drones. If he can stay healthy, don’t be surprised if he climbs this list with a strong final season in Blacksburg.
