It’s almost time for fall camp in college football. The Virginia Tech Hokies are only days away from beginning practice for a new season that lacks buzz. There was excitement heading into last season because so many players returned, and it resulted in a disappointing 6-6 season, with another loss in a meaningless bowl game.
This offseason has featured numerous changes for the Hokies. First, they fired defensive coordinator Chris Marve and strength and conditioning coach Dwight Galt. Later in the offseason, offensive coordinator Tyler Bowen departed to become the offensive line coach at national champion Ohio State. The Hokies Sam Siefkes, Jarrett Ferguson (promoted) and Phillip Montgomery, respectively, to fill those positions. There is optimism that Tech is much better off in each area.

There have been changes on the field, too. Several players departed via the NFL draft, graduation and the transfer portal. To replace them, the Hokies signed around 30 transfers and a 20-man recruiting class. Virginia Tech will look different in 2025 and have fewer expectations.
College Football News recently predicted every VT game for 2025, arriving at a 7-5 record. But there were some mistakes. First, let’s share CFN’s game-by-game predictions.
CFN Predicted Record: 7-5 (4-4)
-
Aug 31 vs South Carolina (in Atlanta) L
-
Nov 15 at Florida State L
Do you see what we see? CFN predicted a 7-5 record, but if you count each game, they actually predict a 6-6 mark. Something else of note is that, in Miami’s projections, which CFN predicted would finish 10-2, they had the Hokies upsetting the Hurricanes in Blacksburg ahead of Thanksgiving. But, in these predictions, CFN has Miami winning.

We will break down our projections closer to the season, but a 6-6 record feels about right. Sorry, that’s just where we are with Virginia Tech football these days. I do believe this roster will have a chance to surprise some folks because the coaching has improved. The Hokies need quarterback Kyron Drones healthy if they’re going to have a surprisingly good year.
