Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is so completely locked in this postseason that multi-hit games are nothing new. But how about multi-hit hits?
Sorry if that has your tongue tied, but the above image says it all. On his eighth-inning broken-bat bloop single in ALCS Game 6 on Sunday night, Guerrero Jr. made contact with the ball three separate times.
The 98.5 mph sinker from Carlos Vargas got in on Guerrero’s hands and he caught it off the handle, which shattered the bat. But then the ball caught the middle half of the barrel before rolling to the meat of it for a third point of contact, finally coming off with just enough mustard to muscle it over the shortstop’s head into left field.
It’s not quite so uncommon to see a batter hit a ball twice in one swing — you can see a full list here, which already includes Guerrero once before — but this particular type of lumber voodoo is far more rare, only recorded one other time off the bat of Hunter Pence. Amazingly enough, that one also came in the playoffs, during Game 7 of the NLCS against the Cardinals.
Three was something of a lucky number for the Blue Jays on Sunday night. They turned a trio of inning-ending double plays, back-to-back-to-back to help their rookie pitcher Trey Yesavage make it through a scoreless outing. The young right-hander had not had a double play turned behind him in his young career until the first of the three, which Guerrero was at the heart of.
The Blue Jays superstar slugger’s triple hit may have been his most impressive knock of the night, but it wasn’t his most important. That would be reserved for the no-doubt homer he hit in the fifth inning to all but ensure that the Blue Jays would live to fight another day. But at least now if Vlad Jr.’s dad ever starts regaling him about what a good bad ball hitter he was in his day, routinely hitting balls off the bounce, he can pull up this video from Oct. 19, 2025, and let his old man know: Well, did you ever do this?
