Waianae wings it to beat Lahainaluna

Waianae’s JJ Kaio became the first quarterback in school history to top 300 yards passing in a game to lead the Seariders to a 42-21 win over Lahainaluna at newly refurbished Raymond Torii Field on Friday night.

Playing in Waianae’s first home game since 2023, Kaio completed 23 of 29 passes for 309 yards and three touchdowns in his first varsity start.

Kanekoa Malaia caught two touchdown passes and 12 Seariders caught at least one pass.

The Seariders came out throwing on their first five offensive plays and Kaio, a 6-foot-2, 215-pound junior, found Malaia open for a 6-yard TD pass to cap an eight-play scoring drive.

Waianae brought in 5-foot-11 freshman Memphis Baker to quarterback the second drive and Baker found Jaylum Pelen open for a 39-yard, catch-and-run touchdown for a 14-0 lead with four minutes left in the opening quarter.

Baker capped his second drive with a 1-yard touchdown run and Kaio engineered a 78-yard drive in eight plays in 52 seconds capped by a 21-yard TD pass to Malaia for a 28-0 lead.

The Lunas, who were held to 23 total yards and no first downs in the first half, answered with an 80-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Kyle Thomas with 21 seconds remaining to trail 28-6 at halftime.

Waianae freshman Mike Satele opened the second half with an interception on the Lunas’ first offensive play.

It set up a 3-yard touchdown run for freshman Kalani Meyers-Tuinei, who led the Seasiders with 32 rushing yards on seven carries.

Lunas quarterback Leka Rosenthal, a 6-foot-3 sophomore, completed a 24-yard pass to Moku Basques for Lahainaluna’s first first down and Joseph Arcangel capped the drive with a 10-yard TD run to cut the deficit to 35-14.

Arcangel added a second TD run for the Lunas, who outscored Waianae 15-14 in the second half.

Baker finished 7-for-12 for 150 yards as Waianae finished with 459 passing yards.

Waipahu 37, Leilehua 13 Quarterback David Vidinha threw for 185 yards and two touchdowns and the Marauders, who moved down to Division I from the Open Division this season, scored 22 unanswered points in the second half to pull away from the Mules, who took the Marauders’ place in the Open Division.

Bennett Strobel threw for 210 yards and a touchdown but was picked off four times. Willie Canyon had an 100-yard interception return for Leilehua.

Tristan Pacheco rushed for 110 yards and a touchdown for Waipahu.

Kamehameha-Hawaii 33, Nanakuli 32 Isaac Aurelio rushed for 81 yards and scored the game-winning touchdown on a 24-yard scamper midway through the fourth quarter to lead the defending Division II state champions over the Golden Hawks.

Nanakuli quarterback Allix Yap threw for 265 yards and three touchdowns in his varsity debut. Made Kalua added 94 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Both teams found the end zone five times.
