On Saturday, the Cougars almost upset the fourth-ranked Ole Miss Rebels, falling on the road 24-21. Going into halftime, the Cougs trailed 10-7.
Eckhaus completed 24 of 31 passes for 218 yards and two touchdowns. He found Landon Wright for a 26-yard score to take a 14-10 third-quarter lead. However, Ole Miss would rally in the fourth quarter and jump out to a 24-14 lead. The Cougs scored one last time but could not put the ball in the endzone again with under a minute left in the game.
Cougs wide receiver Tony Freeman had a strong showing with nine catches for 92 yards and a touchdown. Right beside him was Wright with two catches for 31 yards and a touchdown. On defense, Isaac Terrell shone with four tackles for loss, two sacks and an interception.
“We competed for over 60 minutes in the game, I’m proud of the guy’s effort. I just told them in the locker room, there are no moral victories, but nobody can question your effort. We’ll learn from it. We’ll get better because we got to come back out this way and compete against another top 25 team in a week,” Head Coach Jimmy Rogers said.
