The Oklahoma Sooners College Football Playoff chances took a hit on Saturday in their 24-26 loss to Ole Miss. It was a game that was there for the taking, but the Sooners struggled in the fourth quarter, getting shut out by the Rebels in the final frame to drop to 6-2 on the season and 2-2.
Because of their difficult strength of schedule, the Oklahoma Sooners have an opportunity to control their own destiny. Win their final four games to finish 10-2, and the Sooners will most assuredly be in the playoff field. Go 3-1 and Oklahoma will be on the bubble with a strong case for inclusion. However, when three-loss SEC squads like Ole Miss, Alabama, and Kentucky were held out of the playoff last year, a precedent might have been set. If Oklahoma goes 2-2 or worse, they’ll be out of the playoff.

As we get ready for Week 10 of the college football season, the Sooners sit with an 18.9% chance to make the College Football Playoff. That ranks No. 17 in the nation according to ESPN’s Football Power Index and No. 8 in the SEC. Here’s how the SEC stacks up in chances to make the playoff.

Alabama Crimson Tide – 92.8%
Oklahoma is currently 1-2 against Teams with more than a 10% chance to make the playoff heading into Week 10. Their one win came against the Michigan Wolverines back in Week 2. Michigan holds a 14.3% chance to make the CFP. They’re currently 6-2 on the season. Oklahoma’s losses came to Ole Miss and Texas. The Sooners still have games against Tennessee, Alabama, and Missouri, teams with more than a 10% chance to make the playoff.
Simply put, if the Sooners can take care of business and finish the season strong, they’ll be in the mix. The next opportunity to add to their College Football Playoff resume comes on Saturday when they travel to Knoxville to take on the Tennessee Volunteers.
