What you need to know about Notre Dame basketball game vs Missouri

For the first time in program history, Notre Dame basketball hosts a game in the annual ACC/SEC Challenge, now in its third season. The Irish spent the first two challenges on the road, losing in 2023 to South Carolina before a 2024 loss to Georgia. That one, like this game against Missouri, came on the heels of the recently completed Players Era Festival in Las Vegas.

This game starts a stretch of four of five at home, where Notre Dame is 4-0, to close non-conference play.

Series history between Missouri and Notre Dame basketball

Missouri leads 7-2, with Notre Dame 2-1 at home. The Irish have lost two straight and six of eight in a series that started in Lincoln, Nebraska, at the 1980 NCAA Tournament, an 87-84 Irish loss.

This is the first meeting since an 87-58 Missouri win on November 21, 2011, in the first round of the Progressive CBE Classic in Kansas City, Missouri. Tim Abromaitis led the Irish with 22 points and eight rebounds while Scott Martin, now the team’s radio color analyst, added 12 points and five rebounds.

Providence head coach Kim English led the Tigers, who scored 52 points in the first half, with 10 points, six rebounds, four assists, two blocks and two steals in 34 minutes.

Notre Dame basketball vs. Missouri storylines

∎ This is the kind of non-conference marquee home game that Notre Dame fans clamor to see every season, but one that Notre Dame really hasn’t had since a December 11, 2022 visit from Marquette. How will the Irish, and maybe more importantly, how will the Irish fan base, respond? Notre Dame has averaged 4,703 for home attendance in its first four games.

∎ Notre Dame needs to take better care of the ball. In its three Players Era Festival games in Las Vegas, the Irish had 27 assists to 29 turnovers.

∎ Missouri comes to town for the first time since 1994 averaging 92.8 points per game with an average margin of victory of 24.8 points. Its only win over a power-conference team to date is by 23 points over Minnesota.

Missouri F Mark Mitchell

The former Duke forward/Notre Dame nemesis leads five Tigers averaging double figures at 17.1 points per game. In three matchups against Notre Dame while at Duke, Mitchell averaged 14.6 points and 8.6 rebounds in 25.6 minutes.

On February 14, 2023, with Duke up by one and 12 seconds remaining, Mitchell made a 3-pointer with an expiring shot clock to give the Blue Devils a four-point lead in a 68-64 home win. On January 6, 2024, Mitchell set career highs for points (23) and rebounds (14) in 32 minutes of a 67-59 win at Notre Dame.

Mitchell started 67 of 68 games in his two seasons in Durham, North Carolina.

In addition to scoring, the 6-foot-9, 230-pound native of Kansas City, Kansas is second on MU in rebounds (6.3) and first in assists (28) and minutes (29.4). He’s shooting 64.4 percent from the field and 69.4 percent from the line.

Notre Dame G Sir Mohammed

The 6-6, 215-pound sophomore from Charlotte, North Carolina is due for one of those flash games where we become intrigued by what he might offer this season.

Mohammed had one earlier this year when he went for 10 points, six rebounds and six assists in 22 minutes of a 102-70 victory over Detroit Mercy. He had one recently with eight points, two rebounds and two assists in 24 minutes at Ohio State.

He’s since struggled while going for a combined 10 points, 10 rebounds and three assists in the four games that followed the Ohio State game. Mohammed played a season-low four scoreless minutes last time out against Houston.

Mohammed is averaging 4.6 points, 3.0 rebounds and 1.7 assists in 18.7 minutes. He’s second on the squad in assists (14) and in turnovers (14), which often limits his effectiveness. When Mohammed is good, often so too is Notre Dame.
