Despite a bit of a slow start in its most recent game, Penn State is holding on to its spot in this week’s US LBM Coaches Poll. Penn State is ranked No. 2 in this week’s coaches poll after getting off to a 2-0 start to the season with wins at home against Nevada and FIU.
Ohio State maintains its spot at the top of this week’s coaches poll after receiving 62 first-place votes. Penn State received four first-place votes. The only other school to receive a first-place vote was LSU, with one. This is the second week in a row where Big Ten teams owned the top two spots in the coaches poll. Oregon, ranked No. 5, gives the Big Ten three of the top five teams for a second straight week.

Joining Ohio State, Penn State, and Oregon in the top 10 this week is Illinois. The Illini moved up three spots in this week’s US LBM Coaches Poll from No. 12 up to No. 9 following a big road win at Duke.
Penn State was ranked No. 3 in the preseason coaches poll and moved up to No. 2 in the poll last week following its season-opening win and a loss by then-No. 1 Texas to Ohio State. Penn State received 6 first-place votes in last week’s US LBM Coaches Poll.
The only team in the top 10 of last week’s coaches poll to take a loss in Week 2 was Arizona State. The previous No. 10 Sun Devils lost to Mississippi State in Starkville, Mississippi. Other losses among teams in the coaches poll included Michigan (No. 13), Florida (No. 15), and SMU (No. 16). Michigan fell to No. 22 in this week’s coaches poll and Arizona State fell to No. 24. Florida and SMU each dropped out.
Newcomers in the coaches poll this week are No. 21 Utah and No. 23 South Florida. South Florida stunned Florida and dominated Boise State in the season opener for two straight wins against top-25 teams to start the season.

The Big Ten has six teams in this week’s US LBM Coaches Poll; Ohio State, Penn State, Oregon, Illinois, Michigan, and Indiana (No. 19). The SEC leads all conferences with nine teams in this week’s coaches poll; No. 3 Georgia, No. 4 LSU, No. 7 Texas, No. 10 South Carolina, No. 13 Ole Miss, No. 15 Tennessee. No. 16 Oklahoma, No. 17 Texas A&M, No. 18 Alabama.
Here is a look at the updated US LBM Coaches Poll following the results of Week 2.
Penn State defeated FIU by a score of 34-0 in Week 2. The Nittany Lions had a sluggish start to the game and led by just 10-0 at halftime. Explosive plays by wide receiver Devonte Ross and Kaytron Allen in the second half for long touchdowns helped the Nittany Lions pull away for the win.
Penn State will host Villanova in Week 3. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. ET on FS1.
