Penn State held on to its ranking in this week’s AP Top 25, but saw a conference rival leapfrog over it on the way to the top. Ohio State, which knocked off previous No. 1 Texas in a defensive battle in Columbus in Week 1, jumped over Penn State from no. 3 to take over the top spot in this week’s media poll. Penn State remains at no. 2 after starting there in the preseason AP poll.
Texas dropped from No. 1 down to No. 7 following its loss to the Buckeyes. No. 8 Clemson and No. 9 Notre Dame also stumbled slightly following losses but not enough to knock them out of the top-10 in the media poll. No. 3 LSU rose six spots to become the highest-ranked SEC team in the AP Top 25. The Tigers defeated Clemson on the road in Week 1 and jumped ahead of No. 4 Georgia, Texas, and Alabama. The Crismon Tide plummeted this week from No. 8 down to No. 21 after losing at Florida State to open the season. Florida State jumped all the way from unranked up to No. 14 in this week’s AP poll.
