Where’s MSU football land in latest USA TODAY Sports bowl projections?

For the first time this season, Erick Smith of USA TODAY Sports doesn’t have the Spartans reaching the postseason this year.

Smith released his latest batch of weekly bowl projections on Tuesday, and he didn’t include Michigan State this week. He had the Minnesota Golden Gophers jumping ahead of the Spartans and taking their previously held spot in the GameAbove Sports Bowl.

Michigan State is currently in the midst of a two-game losing streak and looking to right the ship this week against UCLA. The Spartans are 3-2 overall and 0-2 in Big Ten play after losing to Nebraska this past weekend.

The Spartans are the only team in the Big Ten to not reach a bowl game in each of the last three seasons, and the drought certainly could continue as Smith is now projecting. A loss to UCLA this week would be a big blow to the Spartans’ chances at bowling so it’s safe to say this week’s game against the Bruins is extremely important.
