In late 2024, the ownership group of Vancouver Whitecaps FC — Greg Kerfoot, Steve Luczo, Jeff Mallett, and NBA Hall of Famer Steve Nash — announced they would be putting the club up for sale.
Since then, however, momentum appears to be shifting away from a sale. Instead, club leadership has signaled a renewed focus on deepening local roots and bolstering long-term stability in Vancouver.

“We need a partner,” Jeff Mallett said this week in a press conference. “We are willing to stay and bring the knowledge base we have.”
A key element in this shift is the push for a privately funded, soccer-specific stadium, which would increase revenue, and control over the club’s future.
Whitecaps CEO and Sporting Director Axel Schuster has framed this initiative as not only a commercial imperative but also a cultural one, emphasizing how critically the community values the club and the importance of anchoring it firmly in Vancouver.
Meanwhile, on the pitch, the Caps remain strong, sitting in 2nd place in the MLS Western Conference, and have now secured the services of Bayern Munich legend Thomas Müller.

The on-field success and arrival of Müller have perhaps reinvigorated those at the top of the club, and could help push the decision-makers to take the Whitecaps into a new era.
