A plane reportedly owned by former NASCAR driver Greg Biffle crashed Dec. 18 at an airport in western North Carolina. As of 2 p.m. ET, it was unknown who was on board when it crashed.

According to airport and Federal Aviation Administration officials, a Cessna C550 plane crashed at the Statesville Regional Airport, about 40 miles north of Charlotte. The crash occurred about 10:15 a.m. Dec. 18. At least one person is dead, the North Carolina State Highway Patrol confirmed to USA TODAY.

According to the online site Flight Aware, which tracks flight paths, the plane departed from Statesville at 10:06 a.m. local time and tried to turn around before the crash. The only C550 flying in and out of the airport is owned by GB Aviation, a company affiliated with Biffle, according to flight trackers.

Greg Biffle was a NASCAR driver who raced full time in the top-tier Cup Series from 2003 to 2016. He made his Cup Series debut in 2002 as a 32-year-old and returned in 2022 at 52 to race part time in five races. He raced primarily under the Jack Roush banner.
