Wisconsin football Week 3 opponent loses starting running back to injury

by

The Alabama Crimson Tide will likely be without starting running back Jam Miller when they face the Wisconsin Badgers on Sept. 14, according to On3/Rivals’ analyst Brett McMurphy.

The projected starter suffered a collarbone injury on Saturday, sidelining him for an indefinite period. The team is optimistic that the senior can return to the gridiron for its Sept. 27 contest against Georgia, per McMurphy.

The injury update arrives just a few days after Kalen DeBoer’s squad named redshirt junior Ty Simpson its starting quarterback for the 2025 slate. Simpson, entering his fourth year with the program, previously sat behind Jalen Milroe and Bryce Young. He’ll lace up against the Badgers at Bryant-Denny Stadium on Sept. 14.

Miller’s injury, meanwhile, is a significant loss for Alabama‘s offense. The Texas native led all Alabama running backs with 668 yards and seven scores on 145 rushes in 2024. He also reeled in 16 receptions for 155 yards and a touchdown through the air. In the Crimson Tide’s 42-10 blowout win over the Badgers early in the season, Miller rushed nine times for 71 yards and a touchdown to pace the backfield behind former quarterback Milroe.

In three full seasons with Alabama, Miller has accounted for 1,092 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns. The veteran appeared poised for his most productive year as the Crimson Tide’s clear-cut workhorse running back this fall.

Alabama may now turn to running back Richard Young, who tallied 146 rush yards and a pair of scores in 2024, to assume No. 1 duties in Miller’s absence. Sophomore Daniel Hill and redshirt senior Dre Washington are also listed as depth options at the position.

Regardless of where DeBoer turns, Simpson will need to adjust on the fly. Reliability in the backfield has traditionally served as a significant safety valve for first-year starters, so Simpson’s play will be interesting to witness when UW travels to Tuscaloosa in early September in search of a signature win.
