The Golden State Valkyries have been one of the nicest surprises in the WNBA this year, opening their inaugural season with a 17-15 record.

The Valkyries have won six of their last eight contests despite missing All-Star Kayla Thornton, who suffered a season-ending knee injury in late July.
On Friday, the Valkyries look to make it four straight wins, taking on the Chicago Sky, who have also been without their All-Star, Angel Reese.
Ahead of the game, Golden State announced that it has signed guard/forward combo Kaila Charles to a third seven-day hardship contract.
After spending her college career with the Maryland Terrapins, Charles was the No. 23 pick in the 2020 WNBA Draft, selected by the Connecticut Sun. She spent her first few seasons bouncing around the league before making the Dallas Wings roster to begin 2025.

She was officially released by the Wings on June 30 before signing her first hardship contract with Golden State on Aug. 1, just a few days after Thornton’s injury. She signed a second hardship one week later.
Charles has appeared in 23 games this year with the Wings and Valkyries, averaging 5.3 points, 3.8 rebounds and 1.0 assists per game.

Charles and the Valkyries will take on the Sky on Friday at 7:30 p.m. ET. Then, they will return home on Sunday to battle Brittney Griner and the Atlanta Dream.
