Wofford basketball hires former player and Virginia Tech assistant Kevin Giltner as coach

by

Former Wofford basketball standout Kevin Giltner was named coach of the Terriers on Sept 22.

“This is home for us,” Giltner said in a school release. “My time at Wofford gave me some of the best years of my life and I want the same for our current and future men’s basketball student-athletes. The foundation of Wofford men’s basketball was laid a long time ago, and I consider it a real privilege to build on the foundation created by my former teammates, other program alumni, and current players.”

Giltner has been a Virginia Tech assistant for the past six seasons under Mike Young, who left the Terriers after 30 years to lead the Hokies in 2019.

Wofford fired coach Dwight Perry along with assistant Tysor Anderson on Sept. 12 and six players were ruled ineligible by the school following an internal investigation of alleged NCAA violations for the players using the school’s meal plan while living off campus.

All players have been reinstated and have indicated they will not transfer if Giltner is the new coach, a source told the Greenville News.

The source requested anonymity because no public announcement has been made.

Giltner played at Wofford from 2008-12, going to a pair of NCAA tournaments with Young as coach. Giltner has been coaching with Young for the past 10 years, beginning at Wofford, and helped the Terriers in 2018-19 go 30-5 with a No. 7 seed and a victory in the NCAA tournament.

“Kevin has been a part of some of the greatest moments in Wofford basketball history, first as a player, then as an assistant coach, and I’ve been fortunate to share so many of those with him,” said Young. “Over the past six-plus seasons at Virginia Tech, he’s brought that same passion, creativity and steady hand to our program, making a tremendous impact on our players and staff every single day.

Wofford opens its 2025-26 season Nov. 3 at George Mason. The NCAA allows teams to begin practices 42 days before the first game.

“With the season approaching and the need to move quickly with this hire, we could not be prouder and more excited to bring one of our own back home,” said athletic director Scott Kull. “Kevin will be able to immediately step in and lead our student-athletes as they prepare for the upcoming season. As a former player and assistant coach at Wofford, Kevin loves this place and understands what it means to represent the Wofford name on the front of the jersey.”

Perry coached Wofford to the Southern Conference tournament championship last season with a berth in the NCAA tournament. In 2023, he replaced Jay McAuley, who was promoted from assistant coach to replace Young but was fired for repeated NCAA violations.
