Women’s Basketball: Frogs move to 2-0 with win over Bearkats

by

Number 17 ranked TCU Women’s Basketball moved to 2-0 with a 88-46 win over Sam Houston this past Sunday. The Frogs rode a red hot shooting performance to the blowout win, making 58.3% of their attempts from the field and 45.5% from three. TCU played sound defensively as well, holding the Bearkats to just 28.8% shooting from the field and 25% shooting from three. The Frogs continued to move the ball well with over 20 assists as a team for the second straight game. Olivia Miles led the Frogs in scoring and assists with 22 points on 72.7% shooting from the field along with nine assists, three rebounds, and four steals. Miles has been very efficient through two games for the Frogs as she needed just 11 shots to reach 22 points. Donovyn Hunter continued her hot start to the season with 20 points, five rebounds, six assists, and one block. One of the more promising statistics for TCU is that Hunter is shooting 44% from three through two games. Mark Campbell is giving Hunter more responsibility on offense this season, especially as a secondary ball handler and Hunter has made the most of that opportunity.

Maddie Scherr had a solid game in her second game back from a season ending injury suffered last season. The former Kentucky Wildcat had eight points, four rebounds, and four assists on 60% shooting from the field. With the loss of Hailey Van Lith and Madison Connor this offseason, TCU needed to find effective guard play and Miles, Hunter, and Scherr have all looked more than up to the task through two games. Clara Silva demonstrated her two way prowess at center with nine points, nine rebounds, one assist, and two blocks. Kennedy Basham was effective off the bench again with eight points, four rebounds, and two blocks. The one-two punch of Silva and Basham at center has provided the Frogs with excellent rim protection as opponents have to work around a six foot seven center for the entire game.

TCU had an excellent defensive first quarter holding the Bearkats to just eight points through the first ten minutes. The Frogs used that defensive effort to open the game on a 14-0 run over the first five minutes. TCU held the fourteen point lead through the rest of the quarter and started the second up 22-8. The Sam Houston offense woke up a bit in the second quarter but the Frogs continued to hit shots and TCU extended the lead to 44-24 going into halftime. TCU effectively closed out the game with a 10-0 run over a minute and a half stretch in the third quarter and outscored the Bearkats 24-9 in the fourth.

This was not a perfect game for the Frogs, however, as TCU gave Sam Houston’s offense too many extra chances on offensive rebounds and turnovers by the Frogs. TCU let up fourteen offensive rebounds and turned the ball over 20 times to the Bearkats. The Frogs played well defensively to let up just 14 points off of those turnovers but the Frogs have to take better care of the ball moving forward.
