Women’s Basketball: Olivia Miles and excellent defense lead No. 10 TCU past Arizona State

by

Number 10 ranked TCU Women’s Basketball finished off a two-game homestand with a 77-46 win over Arizona State last Sunday. It was a dominant defensive performance from the Horned Frogs, holding Arizona State to 22 points fewer than its per game average. With this win and the win over Oklahoma State last Wednesday, the Horned Frogs have taken down two solid programs to bounce back nicely from the loss on the road to Utah. TCU moved to 16-1 with the win and 4-1 in the Big 12, good for a tie for second in the conference.

Olivia Miles once again led the Horned Frogs in scoring with 22 points to go with five rebounds, six assists and one steal. Miles was very efficient in her scoring, making 60% of her shots from the field and 60% of her shots from three. Clara Silva recorded her seventh straight game with double-digit points and her fourth double-double as a Horned Frog with ten points, 12 rebounds, three assists, two steals and one block. Silva has been a key piece of the TCU offense this season as an effective roller off of ball screens and as a solid passer out of the post. Donovyn Hunter was the third Horned Frog in double figures with ten points, two rebounds and two assists. Hunter finding more opportunities on the offensive end is a great sign for the Horned Frogs, as TCU will need her secondary scoring if they want to defend their Big 12 title. Maddie Scherr made multiple threes for the second straight game as she finished with nine points, four rebounds, two assists, two steals and two blocks. Scherr has been a rock solid perimeter defender for the Frogs this season, averaging one steal and one block per game. Taylor Bigby had another solid game off the bench with eight points, three rebounds, one steal and two made three pointers. Kennedy Basham was effective off the bench in her 13 minutes of action with six points on three of three shooting from the field along with three rebounds, one assist and one block.

TCU got excellent minutes from its bench for the second straight game as the Horned Frog bench outscored the Sun Devil bench 22-12. The Horned Frogs tend to lean heavily on their starters for scoring and overall production, but the bench delivering back-to-back solid games is a great sign for surviving the gauntlet of Big 12 play. The area where TCU really dominated the game was in the paint as the Horned Frogs outscored Arizona State by a margin of 42-16 in points in the paint. This paint scoring played a big part in the efficiency of the TCU offense as the Horned Frogs shot 55% from the field as a team. TCU continues to struggle with turnovers, however, as they gave the ball away 17 times as a team against the Sun Devils.

The TCU defense shut down a balanced Arizona State attack, limiting the Sun Devils to just 29% shooting from the field and 25% shooting from three. The Frogs did a great job getting their hands in passing lanes and putting pressure on ball handlers as Arizona State tallied 17 turnovers as a team. Only one Arizona State player scored in double figures as the TCU defense played a lockdown game.

The Horned Frogs will look to extend the winning streak to three games on Wednesday at 6:00 pm against West Virginia in Morgantown. The Mountaineers are 14-3 on the season and 4-1 in the Big 12 and are coming off a great win on the road over number 11 Iowa State in their last game. West Virginia’s only conference loss came against a Texas Tech team that is leading the conference as the Horned Frogs will have an opportunity to pick up a quality win on the road.
