Women’s Basketball: Olivia Miles’s 20 points leads No. 13 TCU past Oklahoma State

by

Number 13 ranked TCU Women’s Basketball got back into the win column on Wednesday with a 69-61 win over Oklahoma State in Fort Worth. After a tough defensive performance in their last game on the road against Utah, the Horned Frogs bounced back well, with their defense leading them to a win over the Cowgirls. The Horned Frogs moved to 15-1 on the season and 3-1 in the Big 12 with the win over a solid Oklahoma State team.

Olivia Miles led the Horned Frogs in scoring with 20 points to go along with eight assists, six rebounds and two steals. Miles returned to her usual level of shooting, making two of four attempts from three and eight of 15 attempts from the floor. Clara Silva continues to be a consistent inside scoring threat, tallying 12 points, seven rebounds, two assists, three blocks and one steal against Oklahoma State. Miles and Silva have developed impressive chemistry in the pick-and-roll and it has resulted in Silva scoring in double figures in six straight games. Maddie Scherr had a solid game for the Horned Frogs, knocking down two threes on her way to six points, six rebounds, three assists and one block. Marta Suarez had a quieter game scoring-wise by her standards but still had a solid night for the Horned Frogs with 11 points, three rebounds, two assists and three steals. Taylor Bigby was a key player in this win for the Horned Frogs, knocking down three shots from beyond the arc, providing a much needed scoring punch off the bench.

After a tough shooting game against Utah in their last game, the Horned Frogs were red hot from beyond the arc against Oklahoma State, making 50% of their shots from three as a team. TCU’s shot selection was also much improved compared to last game as they shot 50% from the field as a team. The Horned Frogs had excellent ball movement all game as they racked up 20 assists as a team compared to just eight total assists by Oklahoma State. TCU got important contributions from both Veronica Sheffey and Bigby off the bench as they combined for 13 important points in a low scoring game. TCU’s starting five have played a high volume of minutes this season and contributions off the bench will be important for the Horned Frogs to keep the starters fresh the rest of the season. One area for the Frog offense to improve on will be turnovers. TCU moves the ball well but have struggled at times with turnovers this season, totaling 16 as a team against Oklahoma State. The TCU offense can be explosive and score with any team in the country but turnovers have been an issue this season.

The TCU defense returned to its usual dominant form against Oklahoma State, holding a Cowgirls team that averages almost 90 points per game to just 61. TCU held Oklahoma State to 40% shooting from the field and just 18% shooting from three. The Horned Frogs did a great job of defending without fouling as OSU attempted just 13 free throws as a team. TCU forced 12 turnovers, limited Oklahoma State to just eight total assists and overall played a great defensive game.

The Horned Frogs will have an opportunity to build off of this win on Sunday at 4:00 pm in Fort Worth as they are set to take on Arizona State. The Sun Devils have been red hot so far this season as they went undefeated in non-conference play and are 3-1 so far in Big 12 play. Arizona State is coming off of a blowout win over UCF in their last game as the Horned Frogs will need to play their best game to take down ASU.
