Women’s Basketball Opens as Preseason No. 5

by

Well since LSU’s football season is over for all intents and purposes, let’s focus on a team that actually has won at the highest level.

The college basketball season is on the horizon, and when LSU takes the court for an official game (November 4 against Houston Baptist) they will open the 2025-26 campaign as the No. 5 team in the nation. Ahead of LSU are the defending national champion UConn Huskies, followed by South Carolina, UCLA, and Texas.

LSU’s season unofficially began Thursday night as the Tigers hosted Mississippi College in an exhibition match. LSU won that game by a cool 102 points, 148-46. Kim Mulkey’s squad will have one final tuneup this Thursday against Langston in the PMAC and admission is free.

As is Kim Mulkey’s wont to do, LSU’s non-conference schedule is extremely light. We won’t get a true feel for how good LSU is until December 4 when the Tigers travel to Durham to take on #7 Duke as part of the SEC/ACC Challenge.

In total there are eight SEC teams in the AP’s Preseason Top 25, and five are in the top-8. The preseason AP Poll is as follows:

  1. Kentucky/Richmond (Tied for 24th)
