Number eight ranked TCU Women’s Basketball moved to 8-0 this past Friday with a comfortable 82-61 win over UAB in the final game of the Cancun Challenge. The Frogs bounced back from a slower offensive performance in their last outing with a great offensive game against the Blazers. The Frogs have continued to roll in their non-conference slate with eight double digit wins this season. This game was also their sixth win with a margin of victory of at least 20 points. While the competition has not been outstanding for some of these games, TCU has taken care of business and added a few quality wins to the resume along the way.
Marta Suarez once again led the Frogs in scoring as she continues to prove herself as one of the premier scorers in the Big 12 Conference. Suarez tallied 19 points, five rebounds, and two assists against the Blazers. One of the more impressive aspects of Suarez’s game is her efficiency as she shot 50 percent from the field in this game and is shooting 54 percent from the field on the year. Olivia Miles had another impressive stat line for TCU with 18 points, three rebounds, and six assists on 58.3 percent shooting from the field.

Miles’s willingness to battle for rebounds and on the defensive end while still shouldering a heavy offensive load has been fun to watch this season. Donovyn Hunter reached double digit points for the eighth time this season with 14 points, three rebounds, one assist, and three steals. Hunter showed flashes of excellent scoring ability last season and she has taken full advantage of increased opportunities in 2025. TCU also got solid scoring off the bench from Veronica Sheffey who tallied nine points and three rebounds in ten minutes of action.
Kennedy Basham was very good defensively off the bench for the Frogs, recording four blocks in her 17 minutes of playing time.
TCU struggled a bit with three point shooting, making just 26 percent of their attempts from beyond the arc, but did a good job of finding other ways to score, making 49 percent of their attempts from the field. Part of that adjustment was crashing the offensive glass as TCU collected 14 offensive rebounds as a team. The Frogs also had no issues getting the ball into the paint and finishing at the rim as they totaled a staggering 52 points in the paint against the Blazers. Though the Frogs will need to shoot the ball better moving forward, TCU showed the ability to score and win in different ways which is a good sign for the team long term.

TCU had yet another impressive game defensively as they held UAB to just 35 percent shooting from the field and 35 percent shooting from three. The Frogs did a great job of moving their feet and defending without fouling as UAB attempted just eight free throws as a team. This was the first game all season that the Frogs have let up over 60 points in a game which speaks to how dominant the defense has been all season.
TCU had a very good offensive first quarter, scoring 26 points to open up a ten point lead after the first ten minutes. Suarez especially got out to a hot start, scoring nine points in the first quarter. The TCU defense shut UAB down in the second quarter, holding the Blazers to just nine points as the lead grew to eighteen points heading into halftime. UAB’s offense had a much better second half, scoring 18 points in both the third and fourth quarters, but the Frogs offense matched that pace, keeping the Blazers out of striking distance.
The Frogs will next take on the Incarnate Word Cardinals back in Fort Worth this Wednesday, Dec. 3 at 6:30 pm.
