Carlos Alcaraz's debut at the 2026 Australian Open was quite positive.
Although he didn't put on a perfect performance on the iconic Rod Laver Arena, the world No.1 prevailed against local idol Adam Walton in three sets and will have two days off before his next match (against German ace Yannick Hanfmann).
The Spanish star had a bit of pressure, as this tournament represents one of his main goals this season and today was his first official match without his huge mentor Juan Carlos Ferrero by his side. Their collaboration ended at the end of last year and this decision left everyone speechless, considering that the former world number 1 had been very important for Carlitos' growth over the last seven years.
In his press conference before the tournament began, the six-time Grand Slam winner said it was the right time to close this chapter of his life and added that they remained on excellent terms. Recently, 'Juanki' said that he is dedicating his time to his family and his academy while waiting for a new project.
Good start for Carlitos
Alcaraz dreams of winning the only Major title he still lacks and it is likely that he will have to defeat his main rival Jannik Sinner if he wants to achieve this prestigious goal.
Speaking to 'Eurosport', WTA legend and current analyst Justine Henin highlighted the importance of this win for Carlos: "His level was high especially in the first and third sets, while he had a few more difficulties in the second set. It was not so trivial to get the first win without Juan Carlos Ferrero, who had always been by his side since his debut on the professional tour.
Also, everyone knows that the Spanish champion absolutely wants to win this tournament. It was important to overcome the first obstacle in three sets, regardless of the opponent he was facing."
The 22-year-old from Murcia will be back in action on Wednesday, having two days of rest.
