WWE has officially canceled its planned SummerSlam weekend late-night comedy event featuring comedian Tony Hinchcliffe.
Originally scheduled for Saturday, August 2 at 11 PM ET at the Bergen Performing Arts Center in Englewood, New Jersey, the show is no longer moving forward.
According to a report from PWInsider.com, the event was pulled by WWE themselves. A source at the venue confirmed that ticket sales for the show were not strong and had been described as light in the days leading up to the cancellation.
The WWE Late Night Featuring Tony Hinchcliffe event was set to be a comedy night with WWE Superstars, entertainers, and surprise appearances. Unlike the Roast of WrestleMania held earlier this year, this event was not being promoted as a roast. Cody Rhodes was the only WWE talent advertised before the plug was pulled.
Internally, the response to Hinchcliffe’s return was said to be quiet, with some in the company expressing relief that WWE was not repeating the roast format that caused mixed reactions backstage during WrestleMania weekend.
With sluggish ticket sales and lukewarm internal enthusiasm, WWE opted to cancel the show entirely rather than push forward with limited momentum.
