Paraguay’s professional rugby franchise, Yacare have a changed roster for the Super Rugby Americas (SRA) 2026 campaign. Regular starter and captain, Mariano Garcete is notably missing from the 40-man roster named to prepare for the upcoming season.
On the flip side of the loss of Garcete is the inclusion of Argentine Joaquín Lamas for a third consecutive season. Of note is that alterations to World Rugby eligibility mean Lamas could go on to play for Paraguay. The five-year rugby registration law means players no longer need to prove 60 months of “unbroken residency”. Instead, they must demonstrate they have been registered with a rugby body (such as a club or national union) within the relevant country for 60 consecutive months (five seasons) immediately preceding the time of playing.
The roster also includes Ramiro Amarilla. The Argentine was wrongly declared eligible for Paraguay and competed in Rugby World Cup 2027 Qualifying. Paraguay misunderstood the residency eligibility changes from three to five years.
Lamas is not the only Argentine on the Yacare roster. To the contrary, there is a significant contingent of Argentines including Juan Mernes (CAE), Matías Muniagurria (Champagnat), Juan Cruz Strada and Gonzalo del Paso (Santa Fe Rugby), Valentino Quatrocchi (San Luis), Francisco Calello (San Cirano), Francisco Gaspes (Hurling), Nicolás Toth (Lomas), Valentino Marciali (Atlético del Rosario), Mateo Gasparotti (Belgrano), Lautaro González (Palermo Bajo), and Manuel Todaro (Universitario de Rosario).
Former Pumita Nicolás Toth is back in South America after previously having played in France for Provence under Mauricio Reggiardo.
The 40-man Yacare SRA roster includes 27 players who play for Paraguayan rugby clubs.
