Former New York Yankees catcher and manager has a daughter, Lena, who is a women’s college basketball player at Oklahoma State, where she’s a freshman in her first season.

On Thursday night, Lena set a new freshman record for OSU.

She drilled nine 3-pointers, more than any frosh had ever made in a game in Oklahoma State program history.

Oklahoma State was taking on Langston University, an NAIA school, and won 105-35.

Lena finished with 29 points, four rebounds and two assists in 30 minutes.

She had scored 21 points across Oklahoma State’s first two games.

Oklahoma State coach Jacie Hoyt said this to 247Sports about Lena:

“She just wants to make the most of every second that she gets on the floor. And in practice, she’s that way as well. She’s fearless, and I love that about her. I think that that’s really something that sets her apart as a freshman, is that she has that fearlessness and that love for the game. I hope she never loses that, and I don’t think she will.”

Lena Girardi was a four-star recruit out of high school. She was named to the Tamika Catchings Award watch list before the season, one of 20 freshmen recognized as possibilities to be the top first-year player in the country.

If she keeps making a boatload of 3s, Girardi’s name will stay in the headlines.
