NEW YORK – The first three games of this weekend showdown with the Red Sox had been, as Giancarlo Stanton said, “unacceptable.” The Yankees salvaged the finale and reclaimed some pride by powering a few balls over the walls.
Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Trent Grisham each homered twice as the Yankees snapped their slide with a 7-2 victory over Boston on Sunday evening at Yankee Stadium.
The win pulled the Yanks within a half-game of the top AL Wild Card spot and ended a string of eight consecutive losses to the Red Sox this season. The Yankees are 2-8 against Boston overall this season.
Carlos Rodón started for New York and was dominant through five innings, limiting the Sox to one hit on 66 pitches. Trouble found him in the sixth, when he issued three of his five walks and left the bases loaded for Luke Weaver, who surrendered a pinch-hit two-run single to Nathaniel Lowe.
Still, Rodón kept the ball in the yard; he improved to 10-2 with a 1.48 ERA (16 ER / 97.1 IP) when not allowing a homer.
Starting in place of slumping shortstop Anthony Volpe, José Caballero added a fourth-inning sacrifice fly. Five of the Yanks’ seven runs were scored against Dustin May, who lasted 4 1/3 innings.
Volpe entered as a defensive replacement in the eighth inning, with Caballero shifting to right field in place of Stanton, who had two hits and scored a pair of runs.
