Zalan Sarkany, Miranda Grana Claim Big Ten Swimmer of the Week Honors
The Big Ten Conference announced its weekly award winners on Wednesday, with Indiana University claiming both men’s and women’s swimmer of the week honors. Here is a look at the Big Ten honorees.
Men’s Swimmer of the Week
Zalan Sarkany, Indiana
Sr. – Budapest, Hungary
- Swept individual events as Indiana defeated No.14 Texas A&M and No. 17 USC
- Set NCAA qualifying times in all three events and set the No. 1 time nationally in all three events
- Won 500-yard freestyle by 7.77 seconds with a time of 4:11.39, setting an Indiana dual meet record
- Set USC pool record in 1,650-yard freestyle, winning by over 38 seconds with a time of 14:29.87, which was another Indiana dual meet record
- Won 400-yard IM by 3.30 seconds with a time of 3:43.45

Men’s Diver of the Week
Mortiz Wesemann, USC
Gr. – Aachen, Germany
- Swept the diving events at the USC Invitational, claiming both the 1-meter and 3-meter events against No. 2 Indiana and No. 23 Texas A&M
- In 3-meter, Wesemann tallied a whopping 382.10 points to win the event by nearly 15 points
- Won the 1-meter with a score of 407.80, as more than 80 points separated Wesemann from second place

Men’s Freshman of the Week
Noah Cakir, Indiana
Deer Park, N.Y.
- Won two events – one individual, one relay, as Indiana topped No. 14 Texas A&M and No. 17 USC
- Finished top three in all three individual events
- Won tight race in 200-yard breaststroke by 63 hundredths with time of 1:54.19, a personal best and NCAA qualifying time
- Finished second in 100 breast (52.64) and third in 200 IM (1:47.25)
- Helped Indiana win 400 medley relay with NCAA qualifying time of 3:05.97
- Earns second consecutive Freshman of the Week honor

Women’s Swimmer of the Week
Miranda Grana, Indiana
Jr. – Guadalajara, Mexico
- Won six events – three individual, three relays – to lead Indiana to victory over No. 12 USC, No. 21 Texas A&M and No. 24 UCLA
- Swept and recorded NCAA Championships qualifying times in individual events
- Won 100-yard butterfly in 51.55, the only time under 52 seconds
- Swept backstroke events, winning the 200-yard backstroke by 4.21 seconds with time of 1:49.85 and won 100-yard backstroke by 1.59 seconds with time of 50.75
- Backstroke times set Indiana dual meet records as Grana set the fastest time in country in the 200 back and the No. 2 times nationally in the 100 fly and 100 back
- Also contributed to Indiana victories in the 200 medley relay, 400 freestyle relay and 400 medley relay
- Claims second consecutive Swimmer of the Week honor

Women’s Diver of the Week
Daryn Wright, Purdue
Sr. – Plainfield, Ind.
- Swept the springboard events in the season opener for the Purdue divers
- Won with a pair of NCAA Zone Qualifying scores, winning the 1-meter event with a score of 311.65 and the 3-meter with a score of 352.55, winning by 85 points
- Last Purdue Diver of the Week: Avery Worobel (Feb. 5, 2025)
Women’s Freshman of the Week
Liberty Clark, Indiana
Chico, Calif.
- Won seven events – three individual, all four relays – to help Indiana defeat No. 12 USC, No. 21 Texas A&M and No. 24 UCLA
- Swept individual events and recorded NCAA Championships qualifying times and personal bests in each
- Won 50-yard freestyle by 31 hundredths with time of 22.03
- Became second Hoosier ever under 1:43 in 200-yard freestyle with time of 1:42.43, out-touching Big Ten and NCAA silver medalist Minna Abraham (USC) by seven hundredths
- Won 100-yard freestyle by 95 hundredths with time of 47.39 to become No. 2 Hoosier all-time
- 100 free and 200 free times rank No. 2 nationally and her 100 free time marked Indiana dual meet record
- Opened 200 freestyle relay victory in 22.04, field’s best relay leadoff. Split 21.62 to anchor 200 medley relay victory and split 46.68 to anchor 400 medley relay victory
- Earns second consecutive Freshman of the Week honor
