A Sooner sweep.
The No. 9-ranked OU women’s basketball team defeated No. 23 Oklahoma State 92-70 Saturday at Paycom Center.
The Sooners have now won 10 consecutive games, the second-longest winning streak in program history, trailing only a 20-game run by the 2008-09 Final Four team.

“They respond,” OU coach Jennie Baranczyk said postgame. “They’re a team that wants to play for each other. Of course, they want to win, but who doesn’t want to win? It’s more than that. They want to mentor young people. This is their passion in life. They want to give everything they have.”
OU freshman phenom Aaliyah Chavez finished with 15 points, seven rebounds and six assists. Sooners center Raegan Beers added 22 points and 12 rebounds, while Sahara Williams scored 18 points and dished seven assists.
OSU’s Micah Gray led the Cowgirls with 22 points. OSU made just one of its last 10 shot attempts and had four turnovers in the final 3 minutes and 54 seconds.
The Sooners outscored OSU 30-19 in the third quarter, closing the period making six of their last eight shots.

The OU men’s basketball team defeated Oklahoma State 85-76 earlier Saturday at Paycom Center.
“To have Bedlam, obviously, with our men’s game first and our game second, it was really fun,” Baranczyk said. “I thought the crowd was great. It was really engaged. It almost had a tournament-type feel.”

Zya Vann’s strides starting to show
Sophomore guard Zya Vann, a native of Edmond, put on a show in the in-state rivalry.
Baranczyk raved about Vann’s improvement this offseason and it’s starting to show.

“Zya just did Zya things,” Baranczyk said. “She’s so fun. She’s so fun to coach. She’s so fun to watch. She’s so smooth. There’s times where you don’t think she can do something, and then she just finds a way”
Vann has scored a combined 34 points in her last two outings.
She finished with 15 points on 6-for-13 shooting with a team-high three 3s against the Cowgirls.
“It’s just been fun seeing her get confident and be a sponge in the game,” Williams said. “Every day she learns, and she’s just so fun, like she shows up and works hard. It’s been fun to have her bubbly energy around and her competitiveness.”

Cowgirls uncharacteristically struggle offensively
Oklahoma State entered Saturday as one of the best offensive teams in the country.

The Cowgirls ranked second nationally in scoring offense, averaging 96.4 points per game. They scored 26.4 below their average in their loss to the Sooners.
“We did a nice job of team defense,” Baranczyk said. “Caya Smith is really doing some great things, she provides such a defensive spark for us, especially in this a game when we relied a lot on freshmen and sophomores. For them to know that they can come in and play defense the rest comes, is really good.”
OU has been one of the nation’s most disruptive defenses. It entered Saturday holding teams 11.7% below their season shooting average and 11.3 points under their typical scoring output.
One of the main issues was OSU shot just 9 for 32 from 3. The Cowgirls also entered the contest ranked second nationally with 11.4 3-pointers per game.

Baranczyk stays perfect vs OSU
With the win, Baranczyk improved to 7-0 as OU’s coach against the Cowgirls.

The Sooners’ seven consecutive wins over OSU is the program’s longest stretch in the series since a seven-game run from 2008-11.
“It’s a huge dream of mine,” Baranczyk said about coaching in Bedlam. “That was one of the first things I said when I got here. You want young people to see these amazing women and want to become them, right? Because if you can see it, you can become it.
“We want to grow our sport. Our sport is booming on a national level, so we have to continue to have it rise here in the state of Oklahoma.”
OU captured 17 straight wins from February 2000 to February 2007.
Oklahoma State coach Jaycie Hoyt is now 0-5 against the Sooners.
